My dad, Don Kayl, sailed on the Oregon with States Line as 2nd Mate to Master in the late 60's and early 70's. Would like to hear any sea stories from someone who sailed with him. Email me at [email protected], Thanks

Cmakin, I posted another photo, this one with the title of SS Colorado. I don't know much of this class you sailed on, but I always thought it strange the government chose to exclusively save almost all of the older, smaller, and slower class built before in reserve and not also more of these. Were they too caught up in the United States Lines bankruptcy for anyone to get their hands on? And also, did they have any trouble with the powerplants on these?

Yes, I saw the post of the COLORADO and commented on it. I think that these types of ships weren't kept for military duty because of their operating costs. As far as their involvement with US Lines, I was under the impression that US Lines was only operating them under a MARAD Charter. These days, the MARAD mission is that of a military one, so they are more interested in Ro/Ro's that can be prepositioned than operating a viable fleet. I also am of the opinion that the Maine class Ro/Ro's were States Lines undoing (among other things).

States Lines "great white" fleet. beautiful lines and properly selected colors.
The Oregon and her sisters were bought by Moore-McCormick in 1982, operated briefly, laid up in Marad reserves. The Oregon went on to become EMPIRE STATE (my ol stomping grounds). Two or three sisters became cape ships and were used on-off but the remaining sisters have been scrapped. Oregon was built in Newport News and delivered in 1962.
The Maine class Ro-Ros were sold to Lykes Lines and were operated in the far east until laid up in Marad reserve fleet. Now Cape "I" in reduced operating status because of high operating costs.
Overall, States lines ships were operating properly except the Michigan class which suffered from frequent boiler and automation problems, and were scrapped right at their 20-year mark.

I sailed on one of the Ro-Ro's for States lines (the MAINE) and another a year later for Lykes (former ARIZONA, LIPSCOMB LYKES while I was on board, then the JUPITER and now the CAPE INTREPID). I did quite a bit of surveys as a Class Surveyor on the Ro-Ro's, too. It was strange going around onboard the CAPE INSCRIPTION (Ex MAINE) and seeing some of the work I did still there, being used some 10+ years after I made them.

Great picture. I sailed on two States Lines ships, the Montana (similar to the Oregon, but of the newer Colorado Class) and the Maine, one of the Ro/Ro's. Do you have any other States Lines pictures?

I have a picture of the Montana (I sailed on the Washington and MM Dant). Email me at [email protected] and I'll send it to you.
