More history of this ship under name Mekong Express.
My memories of the Wild Rover: I got a working passage on this ship from Freo to Singapore in Nov 1981 by the good graces of owner/master Paddy Keenan. We took on zircon sand at the bulk terminal at Geraldton and sailed 12 days to Singapore. I think she had a crew of about a dozen, mainly Indonesian and Singaporean nationals. The first officer was a Norwegian in his early thirties. There were two young Australian cadets also on board. From memory, Mrs Keenan sailed with us as far as Geraldton. The captain had a sail made which was hoisted from the centre derrick mast after we left Fremantle and used until the wind changed unfavourably somewhere around the northwest shelf. He was pleased with the result, as he was able to reduce engine revs by 10-15 per cent and save bunker. We berthed at Jurong to unload and then moored with other smaller vessels off downtown Singapore. When I left the vessel there after about 10 days, the captain had still not been able to secure another cargo and wasn't sure what the next port would be or what the future would hold. So, it turned out that the ship was sold during the next year... What a pity. But I'm grateful to Capt Keenan for the privilege of sailing on the Wild Rover.
