Description:
WALTER J. McCARTHY JR. is shown while anchored approximately 6 miles northeast of Erie, Pennsylvania, 0940 hours 31 August 2007. The McCARTHY JR. is loaded with 62,000 tons of coal from Superior Midwest Energy Terminal for Nanticoke, Ontario.
The McCARTHY is awaiting the ALGOMARINE's departure from Nanticoke's Ontario Power Generation plant. The day before, 30 August, Greenpeace had boarded the ALGOMARINE and five protestors had chained themselves to various parts of the vessels in an attempt to prevent the vessel from unloading their cargo of coal. The McCARTHY's captain, in turn decided that it was more prudent to anchor off of Erie rather than in Long Point Bay, where Greenpeace may have gotten to the ship.
An hour after this photo was taken the McCARTHY heaved anchor and departed for Nanticoke.
