Description:

05/11/2006, return leg of vessel's Maiden Voyage - first call at the Port of Felixstowe, England.

A view of the main engine's top plates & exhaust valve platform.
The engine is a Wärtsilä 14RT Flex96C, producing 80,080 KW or 109,000 s.h.p., for 25.5 knots m.c.r. (maximum continuous rating).

The largest marine engine in existence, at that moment.

Fuel consumption will, of course, vary according to wind, sea conditions & speed, but it has been suggested that based on an 80,000 KW output with a consumption at 163-170 g/KWh then total consumption at full power output could be between 13.04 and 13.60 Metric tonnes per hour, which equates to between 312 to 327 Metric tonnes of bunkers per day, if in continuous use.

Also installed are five diesel generators with a combined power of 20,700 kW and one Peter Brotherhood (British built at Peterborough ) combined gas/steam turbine generator of 8,500 kW, part driven by the main engine exhaust.

Keel laid on 20/01/2006, launched on 18/05/2006, and completed on 31/08/2006, by Odense Staalskibsværft A/S, Lindø, Denmark (203) 170,794 g.t., 156,907 dwt.& 15,500 teu as:
'Emma Maersk'.

Excellent photo and information about this 14-cylinder monster. Any idea what the largest-diameter hoses connected to the top of the cylinders are?

Cheers,
Leigh

Leigh,
thank you & yes... they are the very high pressure flexi pipes containing the hydraulic oil, which, when operated , open the "poppet" exhaust valve on top of each cylinder.

These valves are in fact what you are looking at in this photo.

They are sitting on top of the main engine, so we can't actually see much of the engine itself.... all 2,300 tonnes of it.

More info is here ( make sure you read off the correct cylinder config.though) :-

Thanks, Rick. I suspected the hoses had something to do with hydraulics.

The Website pdf lists a lot of impressive information plus line drawings of the complete engine that put the whole engine into perspective. Huge!

Cheers,
Leigh
