World Ship Society’s Marine News September 2004 Vol. 58 No. 9 reported that on 26/4/2004, the bulk carrier CAPE AFRICA 77,096/91 developed a 7m x 23m hole in the hull by No. 3 hold when 200 miles west of Cape Town. The situation was considered serious with heavy seas and water entering the hold and the crew was evacuated. She was taken in tow by the SMIT AMANDLA and headed to deeper water where bunker fuel was transferred to the tug NIKOLAY CHIKER. She was then towed , stern first, to False Bay where she arrived 18/5 for temporary repairs.
