The ships are showing the blue square at the wheelhouse if they want to pass other ships at the wrong side. If this is o.k. for the other ship it also shows the blue square. Normally ships are going upstream the river on the right side, this one is on the left side. Have a look to Karl Weisenburger she also is on the wrong side on her way downstream.
