Second thought, I can't believe these these barges are never entirely emptied of coal/whatever, are there dregs which these big grabs can't scoop? What happens when there's only mopping up to do? Surely the wee guy and his mates don't have to shovel the residue in to a closed grab?

I think, where inland barges are to small, this is done by flushing it with water hoses, next it can be grabbed from the middle. The water will then poor out of the the grab.
