Lately Tomas commented on another photo (I forgot which one) where the vessel had similar damages. He supposed it might be the anchor chain when the ship's swinging at anchor. Another member pointed out that this is indeed the reason for such damage.

On the other hand I read somewhere that even rough seas are heavy on the vessel's painting!
