Brian. I was an engineer apprentice on the Tanganyika. I joined her at Immingham, September 65 and spent 8 months experiencing the amazing Doxford engine. Frequent stops to repair lower piston cooling water leaks! HSE hadn't been thought of then, and the apprentices had to strip off, climb in the crankcase, repair the stuffing glands in the swinging elbows, whilst engine oil cascaded over us. Happy days!
Thanks for the photo.

Brian, I think you may have meant the year was 1965, as she was scrapped in 1966.
I am in possession of a Caltex postcard of the 'Tanganyika' which I have scanned and (amongst other locations) have sent it to the Sunderland built ships website, so it can now be viewed HERE .
I have an 86 year old friend, ex Caltex, who I also sent it to and this was his reply to me today: "Thanks Rick -that's a lovely photo bringing back many happy memories -- I note that they are preparing to enter port judging by the figures scattered fore & aft plus some on the bridge wing . I was the Mate and you are right about my future Father in Law being aboard with me PLUS my future Mother in Law !!"

Vessel history:
Launched on 31/10/1951 and completed during June
1952 by William Doxford & Sons, Pallion, Sunderland, England
(787)

8,523 g.t. and 12,340 dwt.,
as:

'Caltex Tanganyika' until arrived at Hirao, Japan
for demolition during October
1966.

Regards, Rick
