Description:

'Gomati' was a steam fired paddle steamer used on the Indian Railways ferry service from Mahendrughat (Patna) to Palezaghat on the Ganges. She was built by Yarrow, Scotstoun in 1950 and had a sister ship 'Yamuna'.

The service was effectively made redundant by the opening of a new bridge at the end of 1982 (which can just be seen in the background), but some form of service did continue after that date. This picture was taken in March 1983 so it is not clear if she had turned her last paddle or was simply just the back-up vessel on the day.
