The ships were intended to achieve service speed of 23,3 kn (trial 25,5kn), so the power needed was way over 30000hp.
At that time, the biggest engine offered by local industry was low-speed Sulzer 10RND90, with 29000hp, what was not enough.
Two 18-cyl. medium-speed 18PC3V-480 Pielstick engines were selected (each rated for 16500hp, weighting only 164 tons) with
reduction gear. The solution turned out to be neither reliable, nor economical (fuel oil consumption was ca. 100-120 tons per day).
That was one of the reasons, why the order for the fourth vessel was cancelled.
In year 1989, as the semicontainer ships were no more competitive, all three existing sister ships were rebuilt in Hamburg.
Having three rows of wide hatches over Holds Nos. 3 to 5, they were in good starting point to become full container ships.
Removing most of the cargo gear allowed to increase TEU capacity - from 540 to ca. 743. Only following derricks were kept:
- over Hold. No.1 - there was only very short hatch, aft of forecastle, letting to small dry cargo room and big cargo tanks;
- over refrigerated Hold No.6. They were still a kind of obstacle when stowing containers, but there was no other provision crane.

B467/4 ZYGMUNT KRASIŃSKI - also ordered in June 1975, but the order has been cancelled before the building was started.
In year 1991, "Generał Fr. Kleeberg" was providing weekly feeder service, from Gdynia to Hamburg and Bremerhaven.
In this operation mode full speed was not needed and the ship could go with only one engine running, reaching some 16,0-16,5 kn.
However even modernized, the ship couldn't match efficiency of only 3 years newer "Apollonia" (IMO 8209602) on the same route.
