The Icelandic Coast Guard owned and operated Ódinn for nerly half a century, 1959 - 2006. Build in Aalborg, Denmark, the ship is 63 m long 10 m wide and registers 910 rrt. It has a specially reinforced prow and sides for sailing in ice. There are two main engines on bord which deliver an engine speed of 18 knots (nautical miles) , along with generators. The ship was always equipped with most up to date navigational and telecommunications equipment. The towing winch weighed 20 tons and had a 3 km long tow rope.
