Description:
A general view of Whitehaven Harbour on the Cumbrian coast, taken in the mid-70's, when I was encarcerated in the laboratories of Albright & Wilson Ltd.
Hard to imagine that in the late 1800's, Whitehaven was the third largest port in UK after London and Liverpool. It boasted a thriving shipbuilding industry, including the 'af Chapman' still extant in Stockholm and featured in shots on this site, and was also the birthplace of the famous Brocklebank Line.

A changed view would greet you these days - gone are the buildings on the quayside (fish market?).
A great harbour to walk around - steeped in history and if I remember correctly the only place in the UK invaded by the American Navy (John Paul Jones)during the American war of Independence, in 1777.

I am sure it must have changed a lot - not quite the same without the smoky old Clearway - but I understand at least there are still bits of her around as 'street furniture'. And yes, you are quite right about JPJ.......
