Description:
No, not some sort of experimental sail-assisted coaster! The Rito was actually caught in the midst of a Thames sailing barge match off Tilbury 20/6/81.
The rule 'give way to sail' seemed to be ignored as the Rito's master raced upriver to catch his upstream tidal berth, passing very close to the barges in the process. Margins were pretty tight in coastal shipping and missing a tide was something to be avoided if at all possible. However, I can't imagine the barge crews were best pleased. (Remember this incident John?)

my records show that we were also treated to such delights as Uganda, James Rowan, Axel Johnson and Botany Bay on that particular tide. And I didn't even have a camera!!
Rito was a lovely coaster of 400 gross tons built in 1950. ex Triton-73.
Owned by Warnes & Pack Ltd and registered in Guernsey.
