Don't have any details about the Swedish or the Norwegian ships. However, some details about the EAC sister ships: Selandia (III)and Jutlandia (III).
Regarding the first mentioned: delivered April 1972 by Burmeister & Wain, Copenhagen. Tdw 34,700. Gt 49,890. Length 291 meters. Capacity 2272 Teu. 3 main engines: One 12 cylinder and two 9 cylinder, 2 stroke B&W, all placed side by side. Total 82,000 IHK, 28 knots, 31.5 knots on trials. Engine later downsized. Sold 1993 to USA, converted to roro cargo for US Military Sealift command as Gary I. Goodman. 1996 new name: Gilliland.
Made a world record on her maiden voyage around the world: 40 days, 3 hours, and 5 minutes (South of Africa). Average speed: 28.04 knots. Due to the EAC objective of a world record the ship was pushed hard during this trip, and serious structural damage to the forepart of the vessel caused a repair yard period of 2 months.

I recall in the early 80's this vessel overtaking my ship (I was 3rd Mate) in the gulf of Suez south bound and we where doing 26kts so I'm not surprised she held speed records. Was she triple screw, perchance??

Hi Ulrik,

Think she is in Brostrom colours in this shot! If she was first owned by EAC
then I was unaware of it till now!

She was originally built for the Swedish East Asiatic Co. which was a division of the Brostrom Group and was their contribution to the Scandutch (Europe/Far East) consortium - the other partners being Nedlloyd, CGM and Wilh Wilhelmsen later joined by MISC of Malaysia. In the early 90's SEAC and Wilhelmsen sold their share to EAC together with the Nihon and Wilhelmsen's Toyama. Following the disbandment of Scandutch, EAC teamed up with the UK's Ben Line to form the UK-headquartered "EACBen" which operated a single Asia/Europe string. Ben Line later sold their share and their three 3,000 TEU boxships to EAC who in turn sold out to AP Moller around 1993. The Nihon became the Ladby Maersk until sold in 1996 to Mediteranean Shipping Co to become the now infamous MSC Carla. Undertand the Nihin still holds the record for the fastest ever round-the-world voyage by a cargo ship which she made in the mid-1970's.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for this information of which, being a rabid photographer rather than a researcher, I was unaware.
