Thank you for this very good shot and for the link. What is the significance of the red crest with the yellow star on each bow - it looks a bit Russian and slightly out of place on the ship.

The ship used to belong to Finnish Steamship Company, EFFOA, from the beginning, being delivered in the summer of 1986. The company established already 1890's was fusioned with its Swedish counterpart in the traffic between Finland and Sweden, the Johnson Line (earlier Stockholm's Shipping Company Svea, roots in the 1870's) in 1990 creating EffJohn International. In the end of 1990's there was only little more than Silja Line left of these at a time great companies. Silja ended up being owned by Estonian Tallink Grupp in 2006, nowadays using name TallinkSilja in Finland and Sweden.

The company emblems of EFFOA was this kind of mariner's star, surrounded by a round-shaped rope and additionally two white stripes on otherwise black funnel. These emblems were used in all Silja Line-ship's owned by EFFOA and flying Finnish flag from spring 1970 until early 1990.

The company as dating back to the end of 19th century used this kind of star decades before the red army star of Soviet Union was first introduced, being used between 1920's and the collapse of Soviet Union in 1992. I think it's cool they've saved this logo in the "fight-front" of this ship despite of her belonging to fusioned company EffJohn 1990-1999, Seacontainers owned Silja Line 1999-2006 and Estonian Tallink owned TallinkSilja 2006 onward's (Latvian Tallink's flag from 2008).

:) You're welcome. An additional information is that they actually thought of removing these symbols when the ship, at a time named Wellamo was being thoroughly renovated and given her present day name in Bremen Germany, spring 1992. But the stars were left as they were, probably because of the fact that she was the last of hundreds of vessels having these stars ever since late 19th century.

EFFOA, naturally had other traffic besides of Silja Line, actually being established as a low-budget ferry-company 1957 as an addition to traditional steamship and cargo motorship traffic between Finland and European countries. In the end of 1980's other company, Finnlines took over the cargo-functions and passenger-traffic, other than Silja Line had merely ceased already in the 1970's.

Even Festival's sistership, swedish-owned Svea 1985-1992 (IMO:8306486) had Johnson Line's logo in the front after being renamed Silja Karneval 1992. Anyways, she was being sold to Color Line in 1994 because of over-capacity in the market, being named "the other Festival", Color Festival (At first Silja Festival was to be sold, but Silja Karneval had swedish onboard-staff and was therefor easier for Norwegians to get familiar with already before the delivery in March 1993. Silja Festival changed route very often those years and seemingly wasn't in good enough shape for Norwegian buyer).

Last year, mainly because of same reasons, profitability, Color Festival joined the Corsica and Sardinia Ferries fleet as Mega Smeralda.
