Interesting comments Dave. BARRY was often at Norfolk when I visited the base regularly during a 16-year period (1998-2015). Last time I saw her was in October 2015 just before she transferred to the Pacific.

I will always remember this ship as I went down to Pascagoula, Mississippi to do some survey work shortly before it was commissioned. I then rode her to Norfolk, Virginia where she was put through her paces including high speed runs, high speed turns, an ASW exercise and casualty drills... an event-filled two weeks. I also knew the Captain, Gary Roughead, from when he was chief engineer on an earlier ship I was on, the USS O'Bannon (DD987). Being on the Barry was awesome! Meeting Captain Roughead again was a pleasure and I knew his career would only go up as he eventually became Chief of Naval Operations.
