This picture was not taken in the Kiel Canal, but on Rozenburg (Rotterdam). On the building in the picture shows the text, Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland.Today the tex is still on this building.

A familiar sight in Northern Europe for decades carrying woodpulp from the Baltic. Never saw any on my side of the Atlantic.
