Description:

Departing Sydney Harbour to work off Plateau Park in suburban Collaroy, where the beach manhole is located. 26 May 2009

IMO number : 9242376 Call Sign : V7DI8 Gross tonnage : 12184
Type of ship : Cable-Layer
Year of build : 2002 Flag : Marshall Islands

In conjunction with Tyco Decisive working south from Guam, she is laying a 6900 kilometre cable from Sydney (off Collaroy) to Guam via Brisbane with a spur to Popondetta and Madang in Papua New Guinea.

Facinating extract from blog " The Marianas Trench is the deepest part of the planet, at over 36,000ft (or 12,000m) and the PPC-1 cable system crosses it to reach Sydney from Guam. The cable finally reached the seabed some six hours after it left the ship. It reached a final depth of 9440m. At the point that the cable touched down, the ship was a further 26km south in 'only' 7000m of water."
