| KATHE NIEDERKIRCHNER, an "XA" type, completed by Warnowwerft for DSR on 31st July 1964, was photographed by Alex Duncan anchored off Southend in June 1965, presumably waiting to load at Tilbury for Havana. On the return voyage from Havana to Rostock, loaded with 10,000 tonnes of sugar, the ill fated ship and her forty crew, some together with family, ran aground on Pentland Skerries, north of Scotland, on 23rd August and quickly sank. |
