Casualties | | Description: | "Seawise Giant" burning fiercely after being bombed by Iraq at Hormuz 14 May 1988.
In the burning oil on the port side of the ship you can only just see the 235.000 dwt VLCC "Barcelona", which was loading oil from "Seawise Giant" at the time. She is down by the bow and leaning to her starboard side after being hit by bombs on the forecastle, in front of the superstructure and on the starboard side aft.
The "Seawise Giant" was hit by several bombs. However, the massive fire was caused by a 500 kg bomb that went through her deck amidship on the port side. The blast ripped a hole of about 8 x 12 meters in her port side below her waterline, and oil from the ruptured tank flowed out, engulfing the ships.
I do not know who took the photo but I have had it in a box since 1992 (I worked at the company who bought the wrecked "Seawise Giant" in late 1989) and thought it deserved to be shared 19 years after it was made. |
