Fishing Vessels | | Description: | | Starboard side view of the menhaden seiner John S. Dempster Jr. as it sails into the sun on the morning of May 23, 2007 in its seemingly perpetual search for schools of menhaden. Part of a fleet of similar vessels, the 1944 built John S. Dempster Jr. is in lower Chesapeake Bay off Virginia Beach, Virginia. A few of the crewmen can be seen sitting in this view. The crews of menhaden boats traditionally have been black and there have been a few books written about them ranging from the legendary "chants" as they hauled the nets to a scholarly discussion of their work in the menhaden industry. The menhaden fishing industry in the U.S. is fascinating from a variety of perspectives in both a positive and negative sense. |
