Photographers comment about this picture

During my 5 day stay photographing the shipping in the lower Chesapeake Bay from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel Highway I saw three old fishing boats that really intrigued me. The were the Lancaster, Shearwater, and Smugglers Point. I have not been able to find out any information about them except that they were built in the 1944-1945 time frame.  They almost look like they were built as Navy patrol boats and then converted to fishing boats.  Ninjapadra, a fisherman from the Boston area has identified these three vessels as menhaden seiners and I am grateful to him for sharing the information.

This photo is of the Lancaster on May 25, 2007.  It and its cohorts spent a lot of time looking in different areas for menhaden and when a school was located, smaller boats were launched that would attempt to drag a seine around the school.  Unfortunately I know next to nothing about salt water fishing so I hope I have not used the wrong words in describing this process.

Again, thanks to Ninjapadra for help ideintifying these vessels.

 Re: Lancaster
Dave - I love this one.

I knew the best looking fishing vessels were NOT in New York, but now I know where they actually are.

Thanks for posting thest -
Tom

Thanks Tom! It is a nice one. Finding ships like this is what makes it a lot of fun. I wonder what else is in the backwaters of Chesapeake Bay?
