I guess I don't understand why that is any of the coast guard's business, whether they think that ship had any commercial use or not. Do they think the Texas A&M University is going to hand the ship over to Al-Qaeda?

It's not a warship, and as I recall the ship above atleast was diesel powered, being possibly the only viable one in the NDRF that is. I love steam plants, and while the Cape Gibson has one, the rest of the world hasn't predominantly used them in generations, nor does our merchant marine today.

They shoud rip out the diesel plant out of the Eagle and have the Coast Guard Academy cadets uselessly learn steam too!

Hello Captain Ted,

This must be one of a series of three Combat Stores Ships purchased from the English Navy. According to the informations on “Navsource.org” this can only be T-AFS-8 SIRIUS (former A-339 LYNESS).
Sister vessels T-AFS-9 SPICA (ex A-345 TARBATNESS) shall be used as target for fleet exercises while T-AFS-10 SATURN (ex A-344 STROMNESS) is reported to be laid up in Philadelphia.
But I wonder about the unusual funnel colour...

Kind regards,
Holger

Good day holger
that what I mentioned to the pilot when we passed, they know sometimes things
because they talk with the crew who brings it in. All the vessels have the same
funnel, only that one a different one

Hi,

the different funnel colours are probably those of Texas A&M university. The SIRIUS is supposed to go the Texas Maritime Academy to become their training ship TEXAS CLIPPER III.

Brgds.

The Navy turned the Sirius over to Marad for transfer to Texas A&M, Sirius spent a couple of years down there being converted, (hence the Aggie funnel color) before the Coast Guard denied their license for the ship. The Coast Guard told them that vessel had no commercial use and that they couldn't use a military ship that had no commercial applications. (Kind of makes you wonder about the previous Clipper, AGS-29, but I guess there are civilian research ships...) So the Aggies turned her into the Beaumont Reserve Fleet and recently received the Cape Gibson out of Suisun Bay to be their new training ship.
