Description:

Cruise ship Aurelia at Lyttelton during a cruise in 1962. She was completed in 1939 as Huascaran for Hamburg America Line and was unusual in being diesel-electric, three oil engines being geared to an electric motor driving the single screw, and having AC power. After serving as a submarine repair ship during the war she was ceded to Britain in 1945 and passed to Canada as war reparations. In 1947 she was acquired by Canadian Pacific and refitted as an emigrant carrier, being renamed Beaverbrae. In 1954 she was sold to Cogedar Line, Genoa, and rebuilt as Aurelia for the Australian migrant trade. In 1970 sold to Chandris Line, renamed Romanza and again rebuilt. Chandris sold her in 1991 and she was renamed Romantica, a name Chandris had previously used. On 4 October 1997 she caught fire, was severely damaged and subsequently broken up.
