Description:

Royal Mail Line's Loch Loyal lying outside the Pipiriki and another vessel in the Tyne. Completed by Harland and Wolff in 1957 the Loch Loyal was a steam turbine** powered vessel of 11,035 gross tons. In 1971 she was sodl to Aegis Group and renamed Aegis Loyal. She was broken up at Shanghai in 1974.

** According to an email we received from the 2nd engineer on Loch Loyal in the early 1960s the ship had a diesel main engine and no steam turbine.

A fabulous picture of a great ship. I served in her for a year back in 1961/62. One small point though, she was not steam turbine. She was a motor ship, having an experimental B&W 7 cylinder engine.
Her near sister Loch Gowan was a steamship.
