On 27.12.1985, "Rylke" was unloading cargo at Freyberg Wharf in Auckland. The cargo gear was operated by local stevedores.
During lunch break ship's crew noticed, that Stülcken boom was bent, 1/3 length from top, by ca. 30 degrees to starboard side.
Most probably, the boom was bent just before the break, when operator tried to rotate it, while too close to the upright position.
It became clear, that in such condition, the risk for any further deck work in this area was too big, and navigation - impossible.
Local shipyard offered to dismantle the device and repair it within ten days (that was too long for ship to wait anyway) but they
did not agree to stiffen the weakened boom, while still upright - so, the crew had to take a chance and lower it by themselves.
They tried it on the next day. Suddenly, when the boom was lowered to some 40 degrees from vertical, it twisted and crushed
on Hold No.3 hatch covers, causing more damages. But at least it was possible do dismantle the device safely, and navigate.
This was eighth documented heavy lift derrick accident on ships of Polish Ocean Lines, in records counting from year 1973.
