On May 18 in Suez Channel collided Japanese boxship Rhein Bridge and US tug and barge Philadelphia, due to either boxship wrong manoeuvre or steering gear fail. Boxship damaged in fore part, towed to Suez. Barge got a hole, oil spill. Barge and tug anchored in Great Bitter Lakes area. Barge and tug were enroute Saudi Arabia – Lybia, boxship was on the way from Canada to Singapore.

I worked as 3rd Engineer aboard the Philly and broke her out of the mothballs prior to this trip. In in fact the picture of her tied to the Mobile I was working there the day that was taken. As for the question of how the barge connected to the tug. The barge had a "tongue" that the catamaran hull of the tug locked into. Two big hydraulic link pins on the tug sat in cradles on the barge linking them together. It moved in seas just like a ship.

I know that she and the MOBILE were laid up a long time on the mississippi river. then the philadelphia was gone, mid last year,, if sold for scrpping, no idea there

.....collided with the US flag integrated tug/barge Philadelphia, which was en route Saudi Arabia for Libya.

Wasn't the PHILADELPHIA on her way to the scrapyard in India? I know that at least a few of these tug-barge combinations have been sold for scrap recently (example: BALTIMORE, IMO#8001189).

To my knowledge this ships is now as one unit. they do not operate anymore as tug and barge. Somone on the mississippi river explained me that the tug connects in the back into a recess, then lowers down by hydraulic power
on this one and the sister MOBILE, they are welded now together as I understood it, permanent.
