An old smoker with a sad end.
Another super shot Fred.. IMO 5508615.
Launched on 26/03/1921 and completed in 04/1921 by Bethlehem Corp, Wilmington, Delaware, USA (3476), 4,887 g.t. & 7,435 dwt. as "E.W.Sinclair" for Sinclair Refining Co. Inc. of Wilmington.
Renamed "Daniel Pierce" in 1941.
Acquired by the US Navy on 26/03/1943 from the War Shipping Administration and was converted for Naval service at Tampa Shipbuilding Co., Tampa, Florida, USA & was commissioned as "USS Shikellamy" AO-90, on 11/04/1943.
During World War II as a Fleet Oiler she was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater.
Decommissioned from the US Navy on 17/01/1946 at New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.
Removed from the Naval register on 07/02/1946 and returned to the Maritime Commission which in turn, returned her to the original owners and became "Daniel Pierce" again in 1946.
Became leakey whilst discharging and was beached at Guanica, Puerto Rico on 13/07/1964.
The 1966 Marine Board of Enquiry concluded that (one of)the cause(s) of her loss was due to loading Sulfuric Acid in wet cargo tanks on a ship which was unsuitable and uncertificated to carry such a cargo. She became a constrcutive total loss.
