Shipmate 007, Yan Popple was my dads best mate at the time, he's the one who got my dad mixed up with my mum in Liverpool, without him I wouldn't exist!

As a young man I remember the Marwit docking at Lisahally near Derry. The crew often came to our home for a sing song on their nights off, I remember a Dutch guy called Yan and a guy from Runcorn called George Dale. They were good old memories, I wonder does anyone remember docking at Lisahally/Coolkeeragh and meeting tne locals in the early 60s.

I was a member of the Marwit crew from 1976 to 1981. To the best of my knowledge the Marwit was built with Chlorine tanks. She was built for and chartered by Dupont for the transportation of Chlorine and containers. I was 21 years old when I left the Marwit and have many good memories of my time on that fine ship. I was privileged to work with a great crew.

I served as cook on the "Marwit 1965/66 and the Chlorine tanks were fitted before that. We carried Chlorine gas in the tanks and neoprene rubber in sacks in the after hold.

I can't be certain that she was built with chlorine tanks but she certainly had them before 1970. My father's engineering firm carried out occasional engine repairs as needed and we visited her frequently when she was in Manchester, that was before I joined the MN in 1966. The Captain had a beautiful model of the ship in his room and that too depicted the tanks.

Excellent photo Allan, it shows her in her heyday. I had the utmost admiration for her captain and crew, at that time there was very little in health & safety and chlorine is a deadly chemical gas used amongst other uses to terminate life in World War 1, in it's liquid state when it leaks it expands instantly forming a gas cloud 400 times in volume, the protection the crew had were puretha respirators (gas masks) and little or no other added protection. The ship that followed her (NORTHERN STAR) was purpose built, carried more bulk chlorine liquid, had total protection for the crew and had a double hull.
