PRESQUE ISLE has just departed lock # 7 in Thorold, Underway toward lock # 8 in Port Colborne, transiting upbound Welland canal. Photographed (this “UGLY DUCKLING” has been an elusive tug to photograph while underway) on October 17, 2005 @ 1635 to 1641.

First enrolled in November-December, 1973. Built as part of tug/barge combination; chartered to U.S. Steel Corp., 1973. Sustained rudder damage in August 1977 when struck unknown submerged object. Repaired at Port Weller Dry Docks, Ltd. Sustained small hole in starboard bow just below waterline, winter 1978, apparently in heavy ice. Repaired at Sault Ste. Marie, MI.

I've noticed you have been commenting on my tug pics. This one is an articulated tug, her namesake barge to large to clear Welland canal, she remained in Erie, PA, USA while the tug underwent a 5 year surway in Port Wellert Dry Dock. Thank you for your comments.
