Hi Bob
yes and no, if you would look in my section :tugs: you will find state of the art, same as in europe. But tech standard and maneuvrebility top of the line, some tugs I shot in Feb 10 in Mobile and some on the missy, like the Capt jimmy c.Moran, Elizabeth B. - and a few others I posted withhin the last 4-6 weeks.
I think the old american tugs looks splendid, same as the old european do, like those old Bugsier/smit tugs,, sure thay are outdated, but then, they were never intended to move 13000 TEU vessels .
The new once looking to me more like bath round bath tubs where one does not know anymore where forward and aft is, also when I as Master on a ship appreciate to get get a tractor tug when we go alongside, I as well like to see those old ones, if only for the eye and the camera.

I know it's a matter of taste but I think American tugs all look ugly and even the modern ones - although they may be state-of-the-art technology under the skin - look old-fashioned from the outside by European standards.
The wheelhouse on this one looks fine for seeing where you are going but not so good for seeing where you've been - or what's catching you up from behind or who's doing what on the after deck.

Nice photo, but the new pilothouse takes something away from the design.
