Description:

Sydney Harbour, Fleet Base Garden Island. 8 June 2011.

In early 2011, it was announced that repairing Manoora was cost prohibitive, and she was decommissioned on 27 May 2011.

The Manoora was placed on operational pause by the Seaworthiness Board in September 2010.

An examination of the over 40 year old ship revealed it required remediation of significant hull corrosion and the replacement of both gear boxes. This work would have cost over $20 million and take until April 2012 to complete. The Manoora was scheduled to be decommissioned at the end of 2012.

The 250 tonne hammerhead crane was constructed between 1944 and 1951. It remains virtually as it was built, without alteration or replacement of any significant elements. It has been out of use since the mid-1990s. The hammerhead crane is heritage listed by the National Trust. Protective mesh has been installed.

Thanks for commenting on this. Note the last sentence in the Military Ships Site Standard, under the heading Category Limitation. "Vessels that are permanently decommissioned, i.e. transferred to museums, sold for scrap, for demolition or sold out of the service should be put under the other categories available on this site. For example a wartime shot of HMCS Sackville belongs in the corvette subcategory, but a recent one belongs under Museum ships. For vessels that have not / will not receive a new name before being scrapped, enter the name in the Title box as for example; Ex HMAS Adelaide"

You have introduced a good point here , ie putting in ex with a decommissioned warship, I will have to change many in my warship section to this, which I believe is correct for the site.
