Description:

Ancient bulk carrier STROVILI at Rotterdam, Spring 1984.

Built as Delphic Eagle in 1958 by Hitachi Zosen-Sakurajima Works, Osaka (#3811) for Sea Enterprises Corp., Panama. (J.C. Carras & Sons Shipbrokers) Ltd., London.)

Name history:

Delphic Eagle
Paphos
Delphic Eagle
Cape Strovili
Strovili (For final voyage to Breakers)

As Cape Strovili she was owned by a company controlled by Greek shipowner George Georgilis. In 1984 she was sold to Falcon Shipping Co. Ltd. of Valetta and renamed Strovili. This is believed to be a single-purpose company of German scrap intermediaries Eckhardt & Co. GmbH. who later in 1984 sold her to Metal Scrap Trade Corporation, India. She arrived at Alang 21.7.1984. and was broken up by Ispat Traders, commencing on 31.7.1984.

In fact, I now recall that she was on her final voyage when this photo was taken, having loaded a cargo of scrap metal for discharge in India, where she was to be demolished herself.

The "Cape Strovili" was actually managed by the Gourdomichalis Maritime Group, Piraeus. I'm pretty sure she never loaded scrap in the Royal Albert. For a bulker and compared to the present day she has gone nice lines and a pleasing profile. She was one of the first bulkers to be fitted with cranes - They unfortunately were a bit too low for the Canadian lumber trade .

OK Stumps, maybe the old memory getting a little fuzzy! Great sight to see either way.

Thanks for the comment Gerolf. I imagine she must be early 60s built and probably one of the first bulkers to be fitted with cranes rather than derricks.

Lovely lines for a bulker. I'm pretty sure I saw her loading scrap metal in the Royal Albert Dock some time after this so will have her details up in my loft...somewhere.
