This was our standard crain ferry design on the great lakes
from 1896 untill 1941, aii cross lake boats looked just like this case in point PERE MARQUETTE 22 imo(5274672) was built in 1924 by a different railroad but for most of her life was identical in size and looks untill PM22 rebuild in the 50's These ships carried verry few passengers, so looks wernt as critical.-Fred

Bob,,thats the reason the american ships lasting so long, builded to last oder time. Look at the old Container ships fron Sea Land,, still operating under Horizon,, builded in the late 70,s, Did you ever see a european/asian build container ship which lasted longer then 25-30 years ? or european build tugs lasing 70-80 years and more. They may be not appealing to the european eye, or even the american eye, but that view is anyway the view of the beholder :-))

American yards to seem to have a penchant for designing and building ugly-looking ships. This one was built in 1927 but the 'American-built' look didn't change much over the next 80 years. That wheelhouse looks like it was designed for a tug!
