Description:

Come across this one in the English Channel of Dungeness in 1964. First and only, nuclear powered cargo vessel, she certainly looked the part. Apologies for quality, was hurried and exposure was pure guess-work.

Not "USS", since Savannah was net a Navy ship, but a merchant ship. Properly speaking, the prefix should be "NS", denoting "Nuclear Ship".

Apart from everything else, Savannah always was a good-looking ship. Just for the record, the name "Savannah" had great significance. In 1819 "Savannah" was the name of the first ship equipped with a steam engine to cross the Atlantic Ocean (although she actually went most of the way by sail). Consequently, it was considered appropriate that the first nuclear-powered merchant ship should also be named "Savannah".

Hello Jan,
Savannah was the first nuclear merchant vessel but not the only one.
I saw a German nuclear merchant vessel in the 70 ies, Otto Hahn, and the Japanese I think also had a nuclear powered cargo ship.

Gerolf

Right you are, the japanese one was Mutsu and the fourth and last (so far) is russian barge/container carrier Sevmorput of Murmanskoe Parokhodstvo. Built in 1988 or 89, still in service - delivers cargo to russian ports along Arctic Oceanway.

A true good looking ship. Saw her 'live' in Galveston back in 1970. Too bad I wasn't yet a photo maniac back at that young age of 12. Many thanks for posting this one. This first, I think
