Clive and Jens, I agree totally with your comments.
It's sad but true.
Thanks, regards, Paul

Well, I think a recreation (or restoration) of SS United States will remain wishful thinking and at last she'll face her end on a beach. As Clive said even Dubai can't afford to convert QE2 and she's still fully operational whereas SS United States is just a rusty hull. I was really disappointed when plans to bring Maxim Gorkiy to Hamburg as a hotelship fell through and she ended up at Alang. But I think ships of that size can hardly be profitable as hotelships as operational costs are much too high... I don't know if SS Rotterdam can be called a success yet as € 44 Mio. were lost during 2010, her first year as hotel and congress centre. Let's hope that 2011 was a better year for SS Rotterdam (Well, I really enjoyed two nights aboard last September...)

Last but not least, Tony, this photo is just wonderful!

Regards,
Jens

Paul, as far as the United States is concerned what is there left to restore? Yes, there is the profile and even that is minus davits and lifeboats. To return the ship to how she looked in the 1950s and 60s it would only be a recreation, not restoration. The moment to restore the United States was lost the moment she was stripped of her fixtures fittings etc.

Hello Clive,
Thank you for your expense comment of CANBERRA and ROTTERDAM.
I wonder what the ss UNITED STATES will cost to restore if it is ever going to happen...
A vessel laying idle for over 40 years is not easy to fix.
All the lifeboats were sold in Turkey to pay debts and also the interior has gone.
We will see what happens.
regards, Paul Wille

After the vast expense (and cost over runs) on the Rotterdam conversion it was very fortunate that no one ever embarked on a similar scheme with Canberra. At least Rotterdam was in good structural condition - unlike Canberra. And where could she have been located and what role could she have provided? Even the oil-rich of the middle east cannot afford to convert the QE2 into a static role.

They should have preserved this beautiful vessel like we did with ss ROTTERDAM in Rotterdam harbour.
She is now a hotel and congress centre with success.
Same appearance anyway with those distinctive 2 exhaust stacks.
