Having returned to this image, I looked for a photo of the 'Ya Mawlaya' but could not find one.
However, she was built by Flensburger Schiffsbau, for Christian Ahrenkiel, as the 'Hans Sachs', one of eleven vessels in the Bulker Type 50/15, designed by the shipyard. Some had deck cranes, some didn't, 'Hans Sachs' didn't.
I have found a good photo of her as built, here:-
http://wangebote.de/251093746808/hans-sachs-imo-7361790-flensburger-schiffbau-flensburg-christian-ahrenkiel-nbsp.html

Wikipedia Class details (in German):- http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typ_50/15

Built in 1975 by Flensburger Schiffsbau-Gesellschaft, Flensburg, Germany (639) 28,270 g.t. & 50,549 dwt., as:-
'Hans Sachs' to 1982,
'Hanse' to 1989,
'Risan' to 1990,
'Bos Odessa' to 1991,
'Vanessa' to 1994,
'Ya Mawlaya' to 1998 &
'Nitson 1' until vessel arrived at Alang on 05/11/1999 for demolition.

REG
when I made my driver license in Germany the teacher told me one thing
ASSUME always that the guy in the oncoming car is an idiot. That I also apply since 28 years as Captain to all oncoming vessels, never mind if I am the stand-on vessel or not. And you guys can believe me one thing, If you would know how much incompetent officers of the watch (OOW,s) are on the bridges of ships nowadays a lot of peoples would not sleep anymore

250 miles NE of Madeira is NOT an area of heavy marine traffic, such as one might expect to encounter in places such as The Straits of Gibraltar or The English channel. It is also an area of open ocean, where maneuverability is not restricted by land masses or traffic separation schemes. There is absolutely no reason why two large ships meeting there should pass close aboard, let alone collide with each other.

Although one may have the "right of way", it is always prudent, absent information to the contrary, to assume that the guy on the bridge of the other ship is either absent, incompetent or a complete asshole. Apparently, in this case, the guy on the bridge of the bulker managed two out of the above three categories.

Thanks for explaining this all Rick. Nice to know why and how and what happened when ships are photographed with big holes in them.

Thanks for the info...Best regards, tvtech

Hi Oleg, this is the Hong Kong owned, single skin tanker, 'New World', IMO 9002207. Built in 1991 by Daewoo, Okpo, South Korea (5047), 78,443 g.t. & 136,517 dwt.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
About midnight on 21/12/1994 the vessel was fully laden with crude oil, on passage from Cap Lopez, Gabon to Dunkirk, France for discharge, when she collided with the Cypriot registered, bulk carrier, 'Ya Mawlaya', IMO 7361790, fully laden with Soya beans from New Orelans to Ancona and Porto Marghera, Italy about 250 miles NE of Madeira, in position 36.12N , 13.00W.
Fire followed the collision, and 8 crew members on the 'New World' were killed - believed to have occurred by the port lifeboat as they tried to abandon ship.
The collision is remarkable as both ships had communicated with one another when still some 9 miles apart and fully aware of each others presence.
The OOW on the 'Ya Mawlaya'- the 'Give Way' vessel refused to alter course for the laden tanker - the 'Stand on' vessel and allegations were raised at subsequent court cases of verbal racist remarks made by the OOW on the bulker!
Further Court hearings decided upon the following:-
1) 'Ya Mawlaya' was unseaworthy with the privity (knowledge) of Kara Mara (the ship owners) upon departure from New Orleans;
2) No, or inadequate, repairs were made to the bridge equipment of 'Ya Mawlaya' including the radar and VHF
radios, before her departure;
3) Her officers were incompetent;
& 4) A 'one man watch system', which was not permissible, was in operation on board 'Ya Mawlaya'.
When the fire on board the 'New World' was brought under control, she was able to proceed under her own power to Lisbon where she arrived on 31/12/1994, for discharge and then examination and repair at Lisnave yard, Lisbon.
Regards, Rick
