named after Calanus, a genus of marine copepod in the family Calanidae (Order Calanoida);
built 1948 by Industrial Shipping Co., Mahone Bay, N.S. for Canadian government;
design by German and Milne;
L x B x D: 47 x 15 x 7.4 ft.; 29 gt.;
former Arctic research vessel put in service in 1948 as
first Canadian oceanographic vessel for the north;
worked Ungava Bay, Frobisher Bay (1951);Hudson's Bay (from 1953);
Cape Dorset; Churchill, Hershel Island; Igloolik;
Scandinavian design, ketch-rigged schooner, equipped with 77 hp diesel;
laid up 1979; registration closed 1988;
1990 purchased by Municipality of Frobisher Bay (for use of maritime museum display);
sold to Robert Eno, Frobisher Bay (Iqaluit).
