Description:
Seen arriving at the Saudi Arabian port of Dammam is the Inchmull, owned by Williamson and Company, Hong Kong, a company associated with Mullion in later life. She was completed by Wm Doxford & Sons in 1941 as the Empire Spray for the Ministry of War Transport, with management allocated to West Hartlepool Steam Navigation Company. In 1943 she was sold to the Netherlands Government amd renamed Gerard Dou, Rotterdam Lloyd, managers. Rotterdam Lloyd bought the ship in 1947 when she became Markem. In 1955 she became the Inchmull and kept this name until delivered to Kaohsiung breakers in 1969.
At left is the port's small tug and at right the lines boat. When we were berthing the lines boat ran our stern-lines ashore then headed forward between the ship and the wharf only to find that we already had the headlines ashore. The lines boat then raced up and down futilely trying to find a way out before going alongside the wharf where the crew abandoned ship, leaving us hanging off on our head and stern lines. A frank exchange of views then ensued between pilot and lines boat skipper from which we deduced that the lines boat skipper was the illegitimate off-spring of a diseased camel. Eventually the crew reboarded the lines boat and got clear, allowing us to come alongside.
