Steamer Alpena arrives Duluth with a load of powdered cement, 7 November 2005. Built 1942 at River Rouge, MI as the dry bulk/ore carrier Leon Fraser for U.S. Steel Corporation. Powered by her original 4,000 HP / 2983 kW DeLaval steam turbine engine. Laid up by U.S. Steel in 1981. Shortened and converted to a self-unloading powdered cement carrier at Fraser Shipyards, Superior, Wisconsin, returned to service June 1991 for the Lafarge Corporation's Jones Act-compliant subsidiary Inland Lakes Management, Inc. LOA: 158.4m, Beam: 20.42m, Depth: 10.67m. Capacity: 14,120 metric tons powdered cement at midsummer draft 8.05m. Thanks to Boatnerd.com for much of this information.
