Originally ordered as commercial osv SAMBAIBA, contract was cancelled in 1977. In 1984 the unfinished vessel was offered to the Navy and subsequently completed by the same yard as TRIDENTE.

note: SAMBAIBA was IMO 8642892. Inadvertantly TRIDENTE was given a new IMO number 8729511 - this duplication has now been rectified and 8642892 has been cancelled. [rev 14/5/2012]
