Description:
The Viking I, in long-term layup at Menominee, Michigan where it was built in 1925. It is one of what used to be a fleet of Great Lakes railroad car ferries and made its living hauling railroad freight cars across Lake Michigan, bypassing the terrible congestion in Chicago. Only one car ferry still operates on the Great Lakes, the Badger, and it hauls passengers only and its coal-fired emissions have attracted the attention of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The Viking I is a survivor but is probably living on borrowed time.
