The major problem with this is very easy to explain. Also aux-engines nowadays are run on Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO,in prinzip barely refined oil.rather dirty) This heavy fuel is of course not bunring as clean as will say Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) or even Marine Gaz Oil (MGO). For the simple reason of cost. HFO cost rough 600 per ton wheras
MDO is more in the 800-900 and MGO even around 1000 $ per ton. Mqke the math with a consumption of 5 or 10 ton a day over the year and over a fleet !!!!

Captain Ted is spot on. She was sailing from Georgetown and had full thrust on fore & aft. She calmed down to an economical haze once she was on her way but I couldn't resist this shot!

JUDGING FROM THE WHITE CAPS/WAKE BESIDE HER FOREWARD AND AFT BOTH STERN AND BOW THRUSTER WORKING ON FULL, WHEN STARTING UP, THOSE AUX ENGINE CAN SMOKE QUITE A BIT, A FEW MOMENTS LATER IT IS USUALLY RAHTER CLEAR SMOKE,, NO EVIROMENTAL ALARM TO BE SOUNDED !!!

LOL! If they could just 'make smoke' in the company colours instead, it could become a popular feature and advertised in the brochures.

Its conditions like this that spur on the anti- emissions brigade and who can blame them. Probably at the commencement of an "astern movement".

Quite the dispersal of smoke from these awkward looking carnival funnels! mrdot.

Whilst I really don't like the Carnival funnel shape, in this picture, with smoke, it looks amazing. Great picture!
