Australian

4,053 gross tons.

Lbd: 403'4" x 53'2" x 22'7". (122.93 x 16.2 metres) General cargo design steamship, coal fired.

Built by the Broken Hill Proprietary Ltd, Whyalla shipyard in South Australia for the
Australian Shipping Board.
July 1950 sold to Australasian Untited Steam Navigation Co (AUSN) and in November of that year
renamed Caloundra.

March 1961 Sold to Broken Hill Proprietary Co Ltd (BHP) and renamed Iron Warrior.
Also converted from coal to oil as fuel.

February 1975 sold to Hi-Firm Corp., Hong Kong and left Newcastle under tow in May for sale to shipbreakers at
Kaohsiung where demolition began July 1975

I was a deck boy on the above vessel and later rejoined her as an ordinary seaman. She was a coal burner when I was first on her but later when I rejoined her she had been converted to oil.

Hi Paul,I think I remember your father, I do remember a Bob Olsen, I was on the above ship also, twice, once when she was a coal burner and once when she was oil fired. Capt 'China' Smith was her skipper for many years. All the best Paul

Hi all my father Bob Olsen who is 79 years old was a young crew member who witnessed one of the Marilinga bomb explosions while on board the Caloundra. He would like to hear from anyone else from that trip.

Hi David, there were a number of the above vessels built, they were all sister ships, the Caloundra ( ex Balook later Iron Warrior) was the last built if I recall, the others were the Balarr, Borda, Barrigun (Later Koorawatha) and Woomera. The Caloundra was the most profitable and spent many years carrying cargo's for BHP Shipping Co. in OZ
