Description:

This is almost certainly the Italian submarine GALILEO GALILEI of the ARCHIMEDE-SETTEMBRINI class. Having participated in the Spanish Civil War she was based in the Red Sea in 1940 and was captured by the AWS trawler HMS Moonstone on October 19th,1940, off Aden. This would make sense as my late father-in-law was in Aden around that time.It would also explain the Italian flag underneath the White Ensign.Used by the RN for training purposes as type X2 with the name P.711 she was scrapped in 1946.
Thanks to Barry and Aveiga for information.

Hi Judi & Lee

This is the "Galileo Galilei" an Italian "Archimede -Settembrini" class submarine, captured, south off Aden.

Having participated in the Spanish Civil War, Galilei was stationed in the Red Sea in 1940, when she engaged British warships until she was captured 19-Oct-40, south of Aden in position 12.48N, 45.12E by the ASW trawler HMS Moonstone.

The Italian submarine will be employed by the Royal Navy (initially denominated X.2 since 1942 with the name P.711) for missions of training in Indian Ocean and in Mediterranean (in 1944). It will be scrapped in 1946

Best regards
