Hello Denis. Try searching "shipbreaking" at youtube. There´s a lot of videos really interesting in how they work, cut and pull up ships in the scrapyards.

Tuomas - Let me correct regarding HSE .... You are referring Alang or Chittagong area for ship breaking Mess ... and certainly you wouldn't have visit the area you may only see in Pictures.... I totally agree these areas are the worst working condition and once you beach the ship in high tide you can see the whole vessel by walking around in evening. they have flat bed shore and most of the steel plates when cut, picked by labor on their shoulder and during that if one person fall, the plate damage the whole bunch of people.... just because they don't use wench or any other Mechanical thing to bring the scrap plate to the ground.... People suffer serious Health Issues and also they dump the oil & other hazardous item in the sea creating very serious environment problem.

But in Gadani we have the Best beach of the world for ship Scrapping, Every ship breaker have Wenches, Cranes, shovels and all the necessary items for handling the heavy ship plate to minimize the usage of human hands.... thus this may also reduce the Human Causalities here in Gadani. So HSE condition is far better than the rest of Breaking yards.

Humans are use just to cut the ships through Gas cutting and somehow when VLCC or oil tanker arrived and if breaker suspicious they do check and try to clean the sludge or remaining oil that may cause fire accident.

But it’s a tough job to do..... Everybody love their Life.. Nobody likes to kill himself just for the ship breaking, so my friend they deserve to be appreciated and acknowledge their work.

Guys, thank you for understanding my point... the term Third world is seems to be taunting as the countries associated with this label are progressing. As for HSE standard, I don't know about ALANG & CHITTAGONG but I do see some improvement in Gadani - Pakistan, You may see in my pictures I do take some portion of the beaches along with ships which are Clean by any standard, No spilling of Oil and any other Hazardous items like Asbestos or PBC .etc...

Second no hard feeling for Mr. DOT.... I just write what I've feel. and thank you very much for all the Comments given by my fellow users...

We all are ship Enthusiastic ..... and getting involved in any discussion is a healthy sign ...

I really appreciate all of your thoughts....

thanks and Best Regards,

Tuomas, the important thing is to understand, that there is no clear or agreed upon meaning of the term a Third World country.

Most countries that remained neutral or non - aligned with neither USA, UK, NATO, Australia ( the First World ) nor USSR and China ( the Second World ) during the Cold War of the 1950s and 1960s, were located in South America, Asia and Africa and for that reason, the term a Third World country is sometimes used to define a country less developed and still struggling for development.

Finland, a very wealthy European country, remained non - aligned during the Cold War and was, therefore, considered a Third World country. The Philippines, an Asian country, still struggling for development, has always been a strong supporter of USA and, for that reason, is not a Third World country.

The term Third World is a complex term to use. Since the Cold War ended, this term has often been misunderstood and misused, mainly by journalists, to define a country, which was less developed, when, in fact, it was a country that remained neutral during the Cold War era - regardless of how wealthy it was.

Fair to say, the term is now less polular than it used to be. Recently the term Majority World is in use, since most people of the world live in less developed countries.

Best regards

Astra, it's been a while since the Cold War. As long as I can remember, "third world country" has been a synonym for a developing country.

tvtech, the reason why shipbreaking is such a mess as it is today is because there are people willing to do it regardless of the risks or damage to the environment. There's nothing worth tipping your hat in that.

Astra
that may be so, but where I grew up Thrid World was meant underdeveloped, poor countries. Seems like that term is not used always as that what you explained but makes also perfect sense.

I stand corrected on this 'third world' thing, in my lifetime the world has changed dramatically, and our so called western world is now much indebted to the rest of the world which now holds our debt, and builds the vessels which used to be clydebank and other 'old world' sites! please accept this appology on my part, mrdot.

I take my hat off to the people working under these atrocious conditions. No Laws. Absolutely nothing.

Somebody has to do it though.

Primedude, thank you very much for submitting your photos of scrapyard ship at Gadani Beach - I find them to be highly interesting.

Mr. DOT, the term Third World does not neccessarily appply here, although this term is sometimes used to describe countries struggling to obtain steady economic development.

Third World is, in fact, a political term, which arose during the Cold War do define countries that remained non - aligned with either capitalism and NATO or, on the other side, the Soviet Union and communisme. In this regard wealthy - but neutral countries like Sweden, Switzerland, Austria and fx Saudi Arabia are also Third World Countries.

Since there is a Third Word, there must also be a First World and a Second World.

The First World: USA, UK and NATO countries. The Second World: Communist countries like the Soviet Union, China and their allies. Third World: Countries thar remained neutral and non - aligned with either capitalism or communism.

Best regards

No matter what comments people make Primedud, I do hope you continue to post your photographs of the vessels at the end f their lives as it is a sight to behold and seemingly not many people with the interest to take photographs have the access you have.

Primedude, the shipbreaking yards in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and many other developing countries are known for their numerous HSE issues such as widespread pollution, unsafe working conditions and improper handling of hazardous waste. For this reason, "third world country" is a pretty good description for the conditions on these beaches.

Mr. DOT .. why you keep calling the Asian scrapyard as third world Country ....
and where are you from ...?

If they don't clean up the ship Mess then where would you Scrap the Old ship.... and certainly your so called "FIRST WORLD COUNTRY" wouldn't allow this sort of job to be perform on their beaches.
... I'm very much disappointment of your thinking coz I've been seen all your comments of my previous post and consider it as scrap too.

You should comment only on Vessel picture/condition and Nostalgic History ..... the Rest is beyond to control by you or any bode else ....
I've got nothing to do with your comment and frankly speaking I don't like it at all to call Poor countries as THIRD WORLD NATION.... Plz Understand my Point..

Shahid
