Ironically, she was gutted by a fire in Brazil, in 1978. I believe her Chief Engineer died in that fire. Her accomadation was rebuilt and she sailed on! There was another mysterious death aboard in 1989 or 1990. Following which, an entire crew signed off in Bombay, for fear that she was haunted! I joined her for one voyage (1990) from Colombo to the Suez, but a nice Master convinced me to saty on! I ended up doing 6 months, until I signed off in Buenos Aires! No, nobody in my time ever saw "Bala" the Ghost!
