Maybe reviving an old post comments but I sailed on her for the final months of her life, as a first trip deck cadet, joined in Singapore late summer of 1980, pootled around the Far East for a while then down to Geelong where we got blown off the berth in a storm causing considerable damage, then sailed back to Singapore for cleaning ready for scrap, finally sailed up the beach in Kaohsiung early 1981.

Just read comments. Funny. Dad was Cpt Cane. Got building pics from 1959 to 61. And launch pics + of me on bridge aged 14.(1974) Building 7ft+ model of her.

Also the possibility Shell finaced the ship and left it to S/Hardy to run her for accounting purposes.

If I rember correctly she was originally going to be named Rhombus for Shell but that never actually took place, and she was launched as the Edward Stevinson.

I think they have it wrong David

Mirmar have her as owned
Stevinson Hardy (Tankers) Ltd

and no mention in Middlemass history of UK Shell tankers.

My first thought was that she was an ex Shell vessel but it was clear she had never had a Shell name. I did a bit of browsing around and found this link on the Internet which suggests that she was owned by Shell and on charter to Stevinson Hardy Tankers. In view of the naming I can only wonder if the deal was done while she was being built.

She was never a Shell tanker but was of a similar style to the Streamlined Shell V class.

However it is highly likely she was on charter to Shell during her career.

Looks like an ex Shell tanker, therefore, a nice tanker...

Her very wide & low height superstructures create a squat appearance of her ... I would not dare say, forgive me, but creates me a "pancake" association, LOL
