I was aboard when this photograph was taken, having just joined a few days earlier as electrician for my first trip with P&O. The object on deck was one of a pair of heavy lifts loaded using the jumbo derrick and which I remember caused the ship to list dramatically as they were lifted off the wharf. She was only to make one more voyage for P&O after this, leaving Liverpool again in September 1977 for the Persian Gulf. After discharging cargo at various Gulf ports we then spent 6 weeks at anchor off Dubai fishing and soaking up the Sun. She was finally sold to a Taiwanese concern and renamed Chi Kong. Being fitted with a degaussing coil and generator as a mines countermeasure this had to be disabled before the handover and one of my last acts there was to cut out a section of the coil cables with a hacksaw and wreck the generator insides with a fire-axe. Handover was completed between Christmas and New Year and we all flew home from Dubai.
